Emmett Till and Mamie TillMobley National Monument will be centered in Illinois and Mississippi the states where Till was from and killed respectively. A yearold from Chicago Till was visiting family in Mississippi when he was beaten and shot to death for allegedly whistling at a White woman. Tills mother had insisted on an opencasket funeral so visitors could see her sons body mangled beyond recognition a decision that helped fuel the civil rights movement. The designation will come amid a national debate over how to teach painful facts about American history in public schools. Some Republicanled states have enacted new standards that critics say sanitize history including the realities of slavery and of racist violence. The Biden administration has demonstrated new willingness to push back on those new policies. The new monument will encompass three separate sites the official said including the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ on Chicagos South Side the site of Tills funeral. Two additional sites will be in Mississippi Graball Landing which is believed to be where Tills body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River and the Tallaatchie County Second District Courthouse in Sumner where an allWhite jury acquitted Tills murderers. The monument will protect places that tell the story of Emmett Tills tooshort life and raciallymotivated murder the unjust acquittal of his murderers and the activism of his mother Mamie TilMobley who courageously brought the worlds attention to the brutal injustices and racism of the time catalyzing thecivil rights movement a White House official said. It will be dedicated on Tuesday which would have been Tills nd birthday. It reflects the BidenHarris Administrations work to advance civil rights and commitment to protecting places that help tell a more complete story of our nations history the official says. It is expected to be open to the public for the first time since the monument was dedicated in 2009. The White House has not said if the monument will be open for the public to view. It has not yet been announced if the White House will make a public announcement about the new monument or if it will be a private event. The National Park Service has said it will not make a statement about the monument or whether or not it will open for public viewing. The national park service has said that it will make no announcement about whether or whether it will hold a public event to honor Tills life or death.
