Spencer Cox of Utah and Jared Polis of Colorado are the heads of the National Governors Association. Their new initiative titled Disagree Better is about toning down political rhetoric ahead of election cycle. A poll this spring found deep divisions among Americans across a range of topics. Cox on countering polarization in the upcoming election argued We are kind of sleepwalking into this election that nobody is excited about and that nobody wants. A June SSRS poll found that more Americans viewed neither President Joe Biden nor former President Donald Trump favorably than held favorable views of either man. A nearunanimous of Republicans and Republicanleaning independents said things in the US were going badly while just of Democrats and Democratic leaning independents said the same. Neither governor has shied away from enacting laws on some of the most contentious political issues. Cox as governor of Utah signed into law this year measures that banned abortion clinics from operating in the state even as the procedure remains legal up to weeks into a pregnancy. Polis meanwhile signed a package of bills that further protect the rights to abortion and genderaffirming services in theState of the Union. s Sydney Kashiwagi contributed to this report. The National Governor’s Association is a bipartisan group of Republican and Democratic governors from across the U.S. with a focus on education, the economy, health care, and the environment. The association was founded in 2000 and is the largest of its kind in the country. It has more than 2,000 members. It was founded by the Republican National Committee, the Democratic National Committee and the Republican Party of the United States. It is the brainchild of former Vice President Dan Quayle, who served in the White House from 1989 to 1993. The organization was founded as a way to promote bipartisanship in Washington, D.C. and the national dialogue on issues such as abortion and gay rights. It now has a total of 11,000 member states and has a budget of more than $100 million. It also has a board of directors that is made up of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. The head of the association is Republican Mary Landrieu, who was the first openly gay governor to serve in the House of Representatives. She was elected to the position of governor in 2008. She is now serving in her second term and is in her third term as the governor of the state of Washington, which she has served since 2010. The group’s mission is to elevate civic dialogue across the country and to find common ground on issues that need to be discussed in a civil manner. The initiative is aimed at elevating civic dialogue in a way that is more effective for the future of our country. The goal is to have conversations of disagreement at a better level a higher level a more effective level for a future of the country, Polis said. Cox said. We are going to do everything we can over the next year to elevate this conversation. We work together we learn from each other we are the laboratories of democracy. We actually have to get stuff done.
