President Joe Bidens younger dog Commander has been involved in several biting incidents at the White House and in Delaware according to US Secret Service email correspondence. The emails were obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests by the conservative group Judicial Watch. Commander was involved in incidents including one that required an officer to go to a local hospital. Other incidents occurred when Commander was walking the grounds unleashed according to the emails. I believe its only a matter of time before an agentofficer is attacked or bit the staff member wrote in an email. According to the Secret Service each incident referenced was treated similarly to comparable workplace injuries with relevant notifications and reporting procedures followed. The White House said the Bidens were working through new training for the family pet following the incidents. Another of Bidens dogs Major was also involved in biting incidents. The German Shepherd later moved out of theWhite House. The President and First Lady are incredibly grateful to the. Secret Service and Executive Residence staff for all they do to keep them their family and the country safe. The First Family is working through ways to make this situation better for everyone said Elizabeth Alexander communications director for the first lady. In one incident in October first lady Dr. Jill Biden couldnt regain control of the dog as it charged a member of Secret Service staff. The Secret Service said neither care for nor handle the first familys pets but continuously work with all applicable entities to minimize adverse impacts in an environment that includes pets. We take the safety and wellbeing of our employees extremely seriously Guglielmi said adding that employees are encouraged to report any jobrelated injuries. As such we are aware of past incidents involving firstfamily pets and these instances were treated similar to comparable workplaces injuries to include with relevant notification and reporting Procedures followed he said. He added that the Secret Services has navigated how to best operate around family pets for the past several presidential administrations. The USSS chief of communications said in a statement that these incidents are no exception and that the agency is aware of the past incidents with the first Familys pets and are working to make sure they do not happen again. He said the agency takes the safety of its staff extremely seriously and that all employees are urged to report their injuries to the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret service. The president and first lady have been partnering with the Secret. Services and Executive. Residence. staff on additional leashing protocols and training as well as establishing designated areas for Commander to run and exercise she went on. The first lady has been working to ensure that Commander does not get into any trouble when she is out and about in the White. House complex is a unique and often stressful environment for family pets and the First Family. is working to improve the situation for everyone by setting up designated areas to let the dog run on the grounds and in the garden. The dog has since been moved to a new home in Delaware and the family is working on a new training program for the German Shepherd. It is not known if the dog will be moved back to Delaware or if the family will continue to work in Washington.
