The race is set to get another wrinkle next week when former Dodgers and Padres first baseman Steve Garvey is expected to launch his campaign as a Republican. Butlers is well-known for his appointment to run as a senator . The more candidates in the race the more your calculations change in terms of what you need to win, said one person working with Lee. Lee went from hoping for the appointment to making a political issue out of knocking Newsom on the assumption she wouldnt get it in recent weeks to knock Newsom out of the state .
