The pandemic-induced pause, implemented in March, brought relief to nearly millions of borrowers by suspending their accounts. Interest rates, which are fixed and vary by loan, will revert to their pre-freeze rates. This pause will come to an end in the upcoming fall, as Congress has barred the president from further extensions. Borrowers can anticipate receiving their bills, outlining payment amounts and due dates, at least days in advance. To find out who is servicing their loans, they will need to reenroll by logging into their servicer’s website.

The initial payment will become due in October, although not all borrowers will share the same due date. According to the Institute of Student Loan Advisors, a nonprofit offering free student loan advice, borrowers can expect their monthly payments to return to the pre-pandemic pause levels. Setting up auto-pay typically took around one to two months, but borrowers can save on interest rates by enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan.

Among these options, SAVE (Saving on Education) typically provides the most favorable terms and is likely to offer the lowest monthly payments for low-income borrowers. If you were previously enrolled in the REYE Plan, it may present the most reasonable monthly payment choice for lower-income borrowers, enabling them to select the smallest monthly payment. Your monthly payments will adjust if your income changes.

Recertifying your income won’t necessitate submitting your income details. You can also choose the most cost-effective plan, even if it results in a larger monthly payment. While it may yield the highest monthly payment, it’s often the most economical option for lower-income borrowers, though not necessarily the most efficient one.
